I : Catalog Course Description
Develops the student's receptive and expressive skills in interpreting. Includes a series of activities leading from consecutive interpretation to simultaneous interpretation skills.
II : Course Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, students will be able to demonstrate the following knowledge:

  • Demonstrate skills in auditory and visual discrimination of semantic pairs;
  • Demonstrate ability to assess speakers'/signers' affect, register and style in ASL and English;
  • Demonstrate ability to analyze context of interchange and content of utterance;
  • Demonstrate close abilities of visual and auditory information.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

The General Education Mission is to provide a core of critical life skills. AM 202 (Interpreting II) addresses four specific general education student learning outcomes from all four major areas:

Communication:
- Understand how to best communicate with persons who use sign language and those who have various levels of hearing

Analysis:
- Compare and analyze the similarities and differences between American/European Deaf and Hearing histories
- Locate and evaluate information

Personal Development:
- Demonstrate ability to interact with those who have a different culture and language
- Develop knowledge of the history of people's different cultural and linguistic backgrounds

Community Commitment:
- Understand the diverse needs of Persons who are deaf, hard of hearing or deafened
- Use information presented in class to participate and possibly assist in equal opportunities for members of the Deaf Community
