I: Catalog Course Description

Offers advanced interpreting student exposure to and practical experience in sign language interpreting.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will observe, analyze and learn from professionals in the field by visiting:

  • Medical settings and learning particular vocabulary, medical procedures and unique requirements of the interpreting setting.
  • Various Real Estate and Business situations in which interpreters are used.
  • Religious and private sector environments, learning particular conduct necessary.
  • Judicial Settings and legal requirements, terminology and obligations of interpreters
  • Mental Health settings and related particulars
  • Ceremonies, such as graduations and weddings

III: Course Linkage

Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

• Communication - Students will leave the course with a real-world understanding of American Sign Language users and how to communicate and interpret for them.
• Analysis - During the course of AM 204, students will enhance their ability to understand users of American Sign Language linguistically, culturally and in a wide variety of real-world situations. Students will be required to analyze their own skills as it relates to their working colleagues.
• Personal Development - Throughout the course students will be demonstrating applied knowledge, personal skills development in both languages and apply current research to their daily professional and personal interactions.
• Community Commitment - Students in this course will be asked to observe and participate in many community settings in which interpreters are used, thus demonstrating their enhanced knowledge of the Deaf Community and its corresponding language, American Sign Language.
