Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Provides students/prospective employees with knowledge and understanding of self and others for effective interactions in the workplace. Emphasizes employability skills such as communication, work habits and attitudes, ethics, conflict management, motivation and problem solving.
Note: Non-transferable for an NSHE baccalaureate degree. Non-applicable towards an AA or AS Degree.

II: Course Objectives

Provides students/prospective employees with knowledge and understanding of self and others for effective interactions in the work place. Emphasizes employability skills such as communication, work habits and attitudes, ethics, conflict management, motivation, and problem solving.

This course will cover the topics of:

  • The origin of the study of human relations
  • Recent organizational developments as related to human relations
  • The importance of understanding individual human behavior when studying organizations
  • Personal issues that can affect human relations within an organization
  • Principles and theories of organizational structure
  • The process of effective organizational communications
  • The role of power and politics within the organizational structure
  • The importance of groups and teams within an organization
  • Leadership theory and effective leadership practices
  • How organizations can effectively deal with change, conflict, and creativity
  • Effective techniques for personal career success
  • Effective skills for working with others as a member of a team
  • Learning to apply course material to improve thinking, problem solving, and decisions

BUS 110B--Human Relations for Employment--meets a General Education requirement of the Associate of Applied Science Degree.
