Programs of Study This course can be found in the following programs of study:
I : Catalog Course Description
Surveys the principles of carbon chemistry. Credit allowed in only one of CHEM 220 or 241. Three hours lecture/three hours laboratory.
II : Course Objectives

CHEM 220, Introductory Organic Chemistry, is a one semester survey of the principles of carbon chemistry. Credit allowed in only one of CHEM 220 or 241. Three hours lecture and three hours laboratory per week.

  • Upon successful completion of CHEM 220, Introductory Organic Chemistry, students should understand principles of organic chemistry including structure and nomenclature, functional group categories, organic chemical reactions and mechanisms, synthesis, introductory spectroscopy, applications to biologically important compounds that may include enzyme kinetics, introductory amino acid, carbohydrate, lipid, and nucleic acid metabolism with emphasis on inborn errors in metabolism and nuclear medicine, and have practiced laboratory methods needed to observe and measure the above.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

General Education Mission: CHEM 220 is a general education class that promotes the development of knowledge, skills, and attitudes that will benefit students in their personal and professional endeavors.

General Education Student Learning Outcome: Students who successfully complete CHEM 220 satisfy the general education learning outcome of having problem solving and critical thinking skills.

Program Mission for AA/AS degree: CHEM 220 satisfies the A.A./A.S. degree mission by providing academic knowledge and skills for successful transfer to meet higher educational goals.

Program Student Learning Outcomes for AA/AS degree: Students who successfully complete CHEM 220 will know the subject matter appropriate to the emphasis of the degree.

Sections II and III were prepared on November 1, 2007. Please contact the Science, Mathematics & Engineering division for more information.
