I : Catalog Course Description
Emphasizes oral communication skills. Reading and writing explored. Chinese-English vocabulary is developed.
II : Course Objectives

CHI 101B the first semester of a four-semester sequence, is designed to help students acquire beginning communication skills within a culturally significant context. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Communicate orally using basic Chinese, i.e., know greetings, ask for directions, talk about family, food, daily activities and the weather.
  • Understand basic Chinese spoken slower than normal pace and develop skills and coping strategies for filling in the gaps.
  • Gain cultural knowledge and awareness about the cultural and linguistic contributions and influences of the Chinese world toward the development of civilization.

Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

• College-level skills in reading, writing and oral communication

• Have problem solving and critical thinking skills

• Understand the importance of cultural traditions and diversity, and ethics in the modern world
