I : Catalog Course Description
Develops listening skills in transcribing tapes to mailable typewritten form. Students study vocabulary and type documents used in typing speed and word processing skills.
II : Course Objectives

COT 111 develops listening skills in transcribing tapes to mailable typewritten form. Students study vocabulary and type documents used in various fields such as sales, law, publishing, insurance, manufacturing, mail order and personnel. Recommend 30 WPM minimum typing speed and word processing skills.

  • 1. Demonstrate the correct procedures for placing the tape in the transcribing machine and for removing the tape from the transcribing machine.
  • 2. Demonstrate the ability to manipulate the machine controls properly.
  • 3. Demonstrate ear-finger coordination in transcribing material from the transcription equipment.
  • 4. Demonstrate the ability to keep the word processor in constant motion while transcribing material from the transcription equipment.
  • 5. Demonstrate the ability to transcribe a mailable, key boarded copy on the first draft from the transcription equipment.
  • 6. Demonstrate the ability to supply the appropriate words taken from the Word Study portion of each section.
  • 7. Demonstrate the ability to supply the proper punctuation in dictated copy.
  • 8. Demonstrate the ability to transcribe at or above the minimum acceptable transcription speed. Minimum requirements vary within the different job markets whether it is the Medical, Legal or the General transcription field.
  • 9. Demonstrate the ability to spell correctly the words listed in the Spelling Review in each section.
  • 10. Demonstrate the ability to match words taken from the Word Study portion of each section with their proper definitions.
  • 11. Demonstrate the ability to edit a letter properly using proofreaders' marks.
  • 12. Effectively use the dictionary, spell check, and other reference material to assist in producing mailable transcripts.
