Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Introduces a systems approach to managing information -- paper and electronic records. Includes practical guidelines for appropriately using records management systems in handling paper and electronic media. Class may be repeated for a total of four units.
Note: Non-transferable for a NSHE baccalaureate degree. Non-applicable towards an AA or AS Degree.

II: Course Objectives

COT 117B Introduces a systems approach to managing information - paper and electronic records. Include practical guidelines for appropriately using records management systems in handling paper and electronic media. Class may be repeated for total four credits.

  • • Identify basic filling terms on objective tests.
  • • Identify the parts of card and correspondence filing systems on objective tests.
  • • Prepare records correctly to be filed, with the use of cross referencing procedures..
  • • Evaluate types of correspondence, individual, business, and government entities, and apply 12 basic filing rules.
  • • File correspondence by subject.
  • • Determine proper geographic filing sequence from the use us of geographic data..
  • • Utilize numeric card files containing account numbers in proper numeric sequence in both consecutive numeric and terminal-digit files.
  • • Retrieve card and correspondence files from file folders.
  • • Assign computer file names to correspondence and assign items of correspondence to computer directories.
