I: Catalog Course Description

Introduces Microsoft Word for Windows, a powerful word processing package that produces documents and handles a large number of routine tasks with ease. Beginning course is designed for people who are at a basic level and want to learn a general overview of the program as well as be productive with simple tasks. Document creation, editing, saving and retrieving files, printing, spell checking, formatting, search and replace, thesaurus and special effects will be covered.

II: Course Objectives

COT 151 Introduces Microsoft Word for Windows, a powerful word processing package that produces documents and handles a large number of routine tasks with ease. Beginning course is designed for people who are at a basic level and want to learn a general overview of the program as well as be productive with simple tasks. Document creation, editing, saving and retrieving files, printing, spell checking, formatting, search and replace, thesaurus and special effects will e covered.

  • • Identify parts of word processing equipment and differentiate between hardware and software.
  • • Create, save, print, close, open, and edit a Word document.
  • • Enhance documents with character formatting including all caps, bold, underlining, and italics.
  • • Use Word's Office Assistant feature.
  • • Display nonprinting characters; change the alignment of text in paragraphs, indent text, and change line spacing.
  • • Copy, move, rename, and print multiple documents.
  • • Adjust the size and style of type as well as the appearance of characters.
  • • Insert special symbols, bullets, and numbers
  • • Proof all types of business documents with the Spell Checker and Thesaurus, and improve the grammar of written documents with the Grammar Checker.
  • • Utilize special features in Word 2002 documents such as Auto Text, spacing between paragraphs, date and time, dropped capital letters, and templates.
  • • Generate documents with custom tab settings, including left, right, center, decimal, and vertical tabs.
  • • Print selected pages from a document and generate envelopes and labels.
  • • Format and merge form files and data files to create personalized business documents such as letters and envelopes.
  • • Adjust page breaks and section breaks, control text flow, and change margins in a document.
  • • Manipulate blocks of text between areas of different business documents.
  • • Display multiple windows and move or copy text between windows.
  • • Create document references such as headers, footers, footnotes, and endnotes.
  • • Revise text and codes using Find and Replace.
