I : Catalog Course Description
Presents an overview of basic communication and counseling skills and the foundations of the helping relationship. Includes experimental situations such as role playing and group exercises.
II : Course Objectives
  • Gain factual knowledge (terminology, classifications, methods, and trends) about the field of counseling.
  • Learn fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories from the field of counseling.
  • Learn to apply course materials to improve rational thinking, problem solving, and decision making.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

The General Education Mission is to provide a core of critical life skills. CPD 117 (Introduction to Counseling) addresses four specific general education student learning outcomes from three of the four major areas.

Communication
▪ Demonstrate college-level writing skills appropriate to their degree or certificate.

Analysis
▪ Know the principles of critical thinking appropriate to transfer degrees.

Personal Development
▪ Know the effective and efficient learning skills.
▪ Engage in meaningful self-assessment.
