I: Catalog Course Description
Studies effective communication with children in guiding behavior. Emphasis will be placed on techniques which help children build positive self-concepts and individual strengths within the context of appropriate limits and discipline. Includes use of direct and indirect guidance techniques as well as introduction to guidance systems.
II: Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, successful students will be able to:
- List and explain the theoretical approaches to child guidance.
- List, give examples of, and describe some of the major techniques for each theoretical approach to child guidance.
- Identify characteristics of a supportive physical classroom environment and a non-supportive physical classroom environment.
- Discuss the role of developmentally appropriate activities and materials in supportive environments.
- Explain the meaning of "developmentally appropriate child guidance".
- Describe the young child's cognitive abilities, memory capacity and skills, and how they affect social development and self-control.
- Define self-esteem and discuss specific adult practices that affect a child's self-esteem.
- Describe forms of aggression and discuss specific adult practices that prevent or control aggression.
- Define pro-social behavior and describe specific techniques used by adults to encourage pro-social behavior.
- Summarize the benefits of an eclectic approach to child guidance and apply knowledge of guidance strategies to several discipline dilemmas.

This course is required for the A.A.S. Degree in Early Childhood Education and the Certificate of Achievement. Students will also learn to organize and implement developmentally appropriate environments and curriculum that are essential for positive guidance in the classroom.
