I : Catalog Course Description
Introduces the foundations of elementary education, current trends and issues in curriculum and instruction, the roles of teachers and issues of diversity. Includes field experience.
II : Course Objectives
  1. Define curriculum and describe what is meant by the field curriculum.
  2. Describe social, historical and philosophical factors that influence curriculum in elementary schools.
  3. Demonstrate an awareness of the developmental needs of elementary age children.
  4. Identify ways in which subject matter curriculum is practiced in contemporary elementary schools.
  5. Display a love of learning by participating in class activities; pursuing personal interests in curriculum studies through lesson plans; giving thoughtful attention to assignments; and going beyond minimum requirements for this course.
  6. Exhibit the manner in which they value democracy and pluralism by the nature of personal comments made during class activities; and personal stands taken in written class assignments/portfolio.
  7. Engage in reflective practice by giving thoughtful attention to ideas expressed in written work, and sharing the impact of reflection through class discussions and written work.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

Communication: have college-level skills in reading, writing, and oral communication appropriate to their degree and/or emphasis.

Analysis: have effective and efficient learning skills, including the location and evaluation of information.

Personal Development: : Have problem solving, critical and creative thinking skills.

Community Commitment: understand the importance of cultural traditions, diversity, and ethics within elementary education.
