Course Outline
I: Catalog Course Description
Introduces the foundations of elementary education, current trends and issues in curriculum and instruction, the roles of teachers and issues of diversity. Includes field experience.
II: Course Objectives
- Define curriculum and describe what is meant by the field curriculum.
- Describe social, historical and philosophical factors that influence curriculum in elementary schools.
- Demonstrate an awareness of the developmental needs of elementary age children.
- Identify ways in which subject matter curriculum is practiced in contemporary elementary schools.
- Display a love of learning by participating in class activities; pursuing personal interests in curriculum studies through lesson plans; giving thoughtful attention to assignments; and going beyond minimum requirements for this course.
- Exhibit the manner in which they value democracy and pluralism by the nature of personal comments made during class activities; and personal stands taken in written class assignments/portfolio.
- Engage in reflective practice by giving thoughtful attention to ideas expressed in written work, and sharing the impact of reflection through class discussions and written work.
