Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Studies the use of microcomputers in operations and word processing applicable to classroom for teachers to operate and utilize microcomputers in education. Special instruction fees.

II: Course Objectives

The successful student will demonstrate an ability to complete the following:

  • Relate the major teaching and learning theories to information technology applications in education,
  • Discuss issues and trends in educational computing.
  • Start up a computer, access a desired program using the Windows operating system, enter information into a document via the keyboard and print out the results.
  • Read, compose and send e-mail messages.
  • Describe the advantages of computer-based word processing; identify the desirable features of a good word processing program; and produce pages of printed text using Microsoft Word.
  • Identify the basic functions of and terminology associated with an electronic spreadsheet; recognize the advantages of using spreadsheets; produce and print a spreadsheet using Excel.
  • Discuss ways that computers can be used to automate some of the tasks that teachers perform; describe ways that presentation software can be used to enhance teaching; demonstrate a working knowledge of PowerPoint.
  • Describe the World Wide Web and how it works; use a browser to search for documents and explore the Internet.
