Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Surveys children's literature: issues, genre, censorship, historical background, book evaluation and selection.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students will have:

  • Gained factual knowledge (genre, issues, history of children's literature)
  • Learned fundamental principles, generalizations, and theories in the field of children's literature
  • Developed specific skills, competencies, and points of view (teachers and prospective teachers will learn how to use literature as a resource for classroom learning in all areas; writers will better understand the process of creating literature for children as well as the way children respond to literature.)
  • Learned how to find and use resources (to locate appropriate children's literature)
  • Learned to analyze and critically evaluate (judge the literature in terms of literary quality and enduring value)
  • Gained a broader understanding and appreciation of children's literature (as a resource in the classroom and as art)
