| Provides instruction of Basic Cardiac Life Support/ Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the Healthcare Provider which includes: one and two person rescuer for CPR and management of foreign body obstruction of the airway in adults, children and infants. Instruction also provides for recognition of signs and symptoms requiring AED intervention, safe administration of AED, and common actions that can be utilized for survival, and prevention of risk factors for heart attack and stroke. Certification according to the standards of the American Heart Association (AHA) is issued upon successful completion of course which requires passing of a written examination and practical demonstration. The course satisfies the CPR requirement for students admitted to the nursing and surgical technology programs, nursing assistant and EMS courses. May be repeated for up to one credit. |
| II : Course Objectives |
At the successful conclusion of the course the student will be able to:
- Cognitive Objectives:
- Describe the steps of CPR: When to start CPR; When to give breaths; including with barrier devices; When to check for a pulse; How to give compressions at the proper depth and rate and with complete chest recoil.
- Describe the signs and actions for severe airway obstruction in the responsive and unresponsive victim
- Describe the links the Chain of Survival, including the importance of: Activating the appropriate emergency response system; Performing CPR; Providing early defibrillation; Ensuring the arrival of early advanced care by activating the appropriate emergency response system.
- Describe the signs of 4 common life-threatening emergencies in adults: Cardiac arrest; Choking; Stroke; Heart attack.
- Psychomotor Objectives:
- Activating the emergency response system
- Giving breaths for adult, child, and infant victims using: Mouth-to-mouth ventilation; Mouth-to-mask ventilation ; Bag-mask ventilation.
- Giving compressions for adult, child, and infant victims: Pushing hard and fast; Allowing full chest recoil; Minimizing interruptions in compressions.
- Performing 1- and 2-rescuer CPR for adult, child, and infant victims
- Using an AED for victims ≥1 year of age
- Relieving choking in the responsive and unresponsive victim of any age
