Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Provides instruction in basic writing skills including sentence patterns and basic paragraph development. Provides review of grammar, mechanics, punctuation, spelling, and word usage. Some sections of the course may be offered through computer-assisted instruction. Grading: Pass/Fail.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the students should be able to:

  • Recognize that how you write is as important as what you write;
  • Define, identify, and correctly use the eight parts of speech;
  • Define, identify, and correctly use the four types of phrases;
  • Define, identify, and correctly use dependent and independent clauses;
  • Define, identify, and correctly use the four types of sentences;
  • Write sentences that are correct and meaningful;
  • Use punctuation correctly, particularly commas, semicolons, and apostrophes;
  • Understand the writing process from pre-writing through editing;
  • Recognize and write clearly defined topic sentences;
  • Develop unified, coherent, and detailed paragraphs with all sentences supporting the clearly defined topic sentence.

Although this course does not fulfill any general education or degree program requirements, it will assist students toward developing college-level writing and critical thinking skills and prepare them to succeed in college-level courses.
