| Surveys literary masterpieces of the Western World. The works as well as the traditions and values they reflect are emphasized. Works from the Old and New Testaments, Sophocles, Plato, St. Augustine, Dante, Chaucer, Cervantes and Shakespeare will be examined. |
| II : Course Objectives |
Upon completion of this course the students should be able to:
- Appreciate the parallels in the literary histories of various western cultures
- Appreciate the impact of cultural/historical evens in general upon the development of western literature
- Recognize the literary movements that have prevailed at various times in western literature
- Recognize the names of major western writers and titles of their primary works
- Recognize the distinct literary styles of especially influential western authors
