Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Includes reading and discussing selected children's literature. Students examine the role of literature in various themes and genres.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course the students should be able to:

  • Understand the evolution of children's literature
  • Recognize the concerns and distinct literary styles of major writers of children's literature
  • Recognize patterns of thought, values, social issues, and behavior as reflected in the literature
  • Judge children's literature in terms of literary quality and enduring value
  • Understand the value of literature in the development of the child
