Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Develops language skills through practice in listening, speaking, reading, writing and structural analysis. Includes an introduction to French culture.

II: Course Objectives

FREN 111 is the first of a four-course sequence designed to meet the foreign language requirement for those transferring to a college with such a requirement. This course helps students acquire beginning communication skills within a culturally significant context. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Write basic French in the present indicative tense incorporating vocabulary and other grammatical points learned over the semester.
  • Communicate orally using basic French to ask and answer questions on a variety of everyday topics, describe people and places and narrate recurring (present) events.
  • Be able to understand some French spoken slower than normal pace and develop skills and coping strategies for filling in the gaps.
  • Gain cultural knowledge and awareness about the areas of the world in which French is spoken.
