I : Catalog Course Description
Introduces the application and appreciation of the basic principles and elements of design, including form, shape, value, spatial relationships and color. Emphasis will be placed on developing creative skills and working with the design process. Taught concurrently with ART 107 when applicable.
II : Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will acquire an understanding of the following:

  • The use of creativity and problem solving in visual communications.
  • An understanding of the processes and techniques required to research and develop diverse preliminary work based on solid design methodologies.
  • The definition and application of two-dimensional, three-dimensional and time-based design elements and principles.
  • Exposure to the use and function of various media and techniques specific to creativity, design fundamentals and methodologies.
  • Expansion of the history and language of design and awareness of the use of design all around us.
  • The value of critiques and the ability to work within the critique process, both as a presenter and as part of an audience.
  • The job opportunities available to educated designers in today's society.
III : Course Linkage
