Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Teaches an intermediate class in the application of computer graphics software to create and edit digital images and designs with raster/paint software (Adobe Photoshop). Students entering this class should already have an understanding of graphic communications processes and have graphics software skills. Knowledge of the following basic computer skills required: saving, opening, and printing documents, opening and closing applications, creating and managing folders and subfolders, viewing the contents of disk drives and external storage devices, managing desktop items.

II: Course Objectives

An understanding of the methods and processes required to design and create pixel based images using the industry standard software: Adobe Photoshop. While working in class will help students to apply theories and applications on the computer, it is often the additional time students spend outside of class that truly increases software competency.

Upon course completion, the student will acquire an understanding of:

  • Working methods common in visual communications to research visual problems.
  • Application methods in electronic imaging to solve visual problems
  • digital cameras and electronic scanners and their proper use
  • Strengths, weaknesses and applications of raster software
  • Adobe Photoshop operation in the creation, manipulation and execution of visual imagery for assigned projects and exercises
  • Presentation of design projects in critiques in a consistent, professional manner

The Associate of Applied Science degree in Graphic Communications will provide employment-related knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the graphic communications field. The degree will meet educational criteria for employment and prepare the student for possible transfer to other colleges and universities to meet higher educational and professional goals.
