Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Teaches functions of health information departments in healthcare institutions. Studies origin, uses, format, and regulatory requirements of health records.

Note: Non-transferable for an NSHE baccalaureate degree. Non-applicable towards an AA or AS Degree.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students are expected to know the following:

  • Define electronic health records and explain why electronic health records are important
  • Discuss what forces are driving the adoption of electronic health records
  • Describe the flow of medical information into the chart
  • Describe different methods of capturing and recording data
  • Understand levels of electronic health record implementations
  • Describe workflow of physician orders and results
  • Explain why systems and devices should be able to exchange electronic data
  • Compare electronic health records in an inpatient versus outpatient setting
  • Describe the importance of codified electronic health records
  • Explain the government's influence on coding standards
  • Have and understanding of prominent EHR code sets such as SNOMED CT, MEDCIN, and LOINC, as well as various nursing code sets
  • Have an understanding of prominent billing code sets such as CPT-4, ICD-9CM, and ICD-10
  • Explain how EHR codes sets differ from CPT, ICD-9CM, and NDC codes
  • Learn how to use the Medcin software to process a patient in a new patient encounter and print
  • Use Medcin to create exam notes for a variety of patients and conditions
  • Explain why billing codes are important in an EHR system
  • Show how Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes are determined
  • Understand and use Patient Management
  • Understand and use problem list
  • Cite information from previous visits in a new encounter
  • Explain how vital signs and diagnostic tests can be recorded in the EHR
  • Describe the workflow of electronic lab orders and results
  • Describe triage by a nurse
  • Discuss patient entry of symptoms and previous history
  • Document a well-baby check-up using a wellness form
  • List HIPAA Transactions and Uniform Identifiers applying the HIPAA Privacy Policy in a medical office
  • Explain Electronics Signatures
  • Explain how technology impacts implementation of EHR
  • Compare the use of workstations, laptop computers, Tablet PCs, and PDA devices
  • Discuss the effect to the Internet on the future of the EHR
