Offers opportunities to develop supervisory skills including directing and controlling, management of human resources, with an emphasis on situations encountered in Health Information Services.

Note: Non-transferable for an NSHE baccalaureate degree. Non-applicable towards an AA or AS Degree.

I. Course Description from the college catalog
HIT 207 teaches opportunities to develop supervisory skills including directing and controlling, management of human resources, emphasis on situations encountered in Health Information Services..
II. Course Objectives or Outcomes

• Upon completion of this course, students are expected to know the following:

1. Explain the history of the health unit coordinating profession.
2. Describe three tasks that the health unit coordinator may perform to support the nursing staff, doctors, other hospital departments, visitors, and patients.
3. List other titles that are used to refer to the position of a health unit coordinator.
4. Explain the purpose and history of the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators.
5. Explain the purpose of the Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics.
6. Explain certification as it applies to the health unit coordinator.
7. Explain the purpose of recertification.
8. List advantages of belonging to the National Association of Health Unit Coordinators.
9. List advantages of sitting for the National certification exam.
10. List five areas of management.
11. Prioritize specific health unit coordinating tasks according to their importance or urgency.
12. Define two types of stress and techniques of reducing stress.
13. List time management tips for the health unit coordinator.
14. List four items that should be within reaching distance of the health unit coordinator's desk area.
15. Identify and apply the five-step problem-solving model.
16. Discuss the purpose of continuous quality improvement.
