Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Provides the student the knowledge and skills necessary to perform the collection, identification, and preservation of specimens as applied to venipuncture techniques. The course includes medical terminology, ethics, fingerstick procedures, and patient contact methods. Emphasizes the role of the venipuncturist in a modern health care delivery system.

II: Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  • Perform blood collection techniques utilizing vacuum collection devices, syringes, butterfly needles, and dermal skin punctures on adults.
  • Carry out procedures designed to insure :
    • proper patient identification,
    • proper labeling of specimens,
    • proper specimen handling, processing, and accessioning,
    • quality assurance and
    • prevention of infection.
  • Demonstrate knowledge related to theory and principles appropriate to the practice of a Level I phlebotomist.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ethical and legal principles appropriate to practice.
  • Utilize principles of effective communication while interacting with patients across the life span.
  • Sit for the certification examination offered by National Credentialing Agency (NCA) as explained at www.nca-info.org.
