I : Catalog Course Description
Introduces elementary problem solving with emphasis on the nature of numbers and the structure of the real number system. Designed for students seeking a teaching certificate in elementary education.
II : Course Objectives

Introduces elementary problem solving with emphasis on the nature of numbers and the structure of the real number system. Designed for students seeking a teaching certificate in elementary education.

  • Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to do the following:
  • 1. Perform and understand the four basic operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division on integers, fractions and decimals.
  • 2. Use a variety of problem solving techniques to solve application problems.
  • 3. Solve problems involving set operations and their properties.
  • 4. Solve problems involving percent.
  • 5. Solve logic problems.
  • 6. Apply estimation techniques.
  • Some of the following optional objectives may also be included:
  • 7. Convert between base 10 and other number bases.
  • 8. Compute compound interest.
  • 9. Solve problems involving irrational numbers.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.
