I : Catalog Course Description
Provides opportunities for students to utilize knowledge, concepts and skills learned in first semester nursing courses to meet the bio/psycho/social/cultural and spiritual needs of patients in a long term health care facility. Students use the nursing process and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs at a beginning level to assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care.
II : Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate clinical skills in a safe and effective manner.
  2. Safely calculate medication dosages.
  3. Apply critical thinking through the nursing process in providing care of selected adult residents in the long-term health care setting.
  4. Use reflective thinking and writing as a strategy to develop clinical problem solving skills.
  5. Use the nursing process to identify health problems of the resident.
  6. Formulate an individualized plan of care for a patient in a long-term health care setting utilizing the nursing process and prioritizing with Maslow's Hierarchy of human Needs.
  7. Utilize nursing interventions to modify human responses to health and illness.
  8. Apply the developmental theories of Erikson and Havighurst to selected adult residents.
  9. Identify nursing strategies that provide cost efficient nursing care.
  10. Collaborate with other health team members through verbal and non-verbal communication in providing nursing care.
  11. Demonstrate legal and ethical accountability in providing care for selected adult residents in the long-term care facility.

The mission of the nursing program at Western Nevada College is to meet the nursing educational needs of the service area. The program prepares qualified students to function as entry-level registered nurses and transfer to higher degree programs.

Graduates are prepared to function in a variery of health care settings, providing culturally sensitive, holistic nursing care to individuals and families across the life span. The nursing faculty supports graduate competency in an evolving and complex health care environment by facilitating the students' development of clinical judgement, promoting professional behaviors, and fostering the value of lifelong learning.
