I : Catalog Course Description
Requires the student to utilize the nursing process in the care of high risk pediatric populations experiencing disruptions in bio/psycho/social/cultural and spiritual needs. Emphasis also is placed on promotion and maintenance of health, caring, communication, documentation, and teaching/learning.
II : Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of NURS 268 the student will be able to:

  1. Develop accountable, safe and caring professional nursing behaviors in the provision of care for pediatric populations.
  2. Implement the nurse's role in a variety of community settings including community resource referral.
  3. Utilize the nursing process in the care of infants and children in the acute care setting experiencing disruptions in bio/psycho/social/cultural and spiritual needs.
  4. Utilize therapeutic, age approriate, culturally sensitive communication techniques when providing care to pediatric patients and their families.
  5. Create teaching plans, including nutrition education for pediatric patients.
  6. Appropriately prioritize care for infants and children.
  7. Document and communicate accurate information about high-risk pediatric patients.
  8. Practice within the ethical and legal parameters of the profession.
  9. Evaluate self-learning needs before, during and after learning experiences in acute care and community settings.

The mission of the nursing program at Western Nevada College is to meet the nursing educational needs of the service area. The program prepares qualified students to function as entry-level registered nurses and transfer to higher degree programs.

Graduates are prepared to function in a variety of health care settings, providing culturally sensitive, holistic nursing care to individuals and families across the lifespan. The nursing faculty supports graduate competency in an evolving and complex health care environment by facilitating the students' development of clinical judgement, promoting professional behaviors, and fostering the value of lifelong learning.
