Course Outline
I: Catalog Course Description
Studies philosophical problems and implications of historical and contemporary scientific inquiry, e.g. the nature of laws, theories, explanations, scientific revolutions, values, relations of science and society.
II: Course Objectives
- Examine the scientific tradition in the West beginning with Aristotle.
- Examine particularly the development of scientific methodology since 1600.
- Ask the question: With human cognition and intelligibility, can we really KNOW the world?
- Discuss hypothesis, laws, theories, and explanations of natural sciences.
- Discuss the alternative ways that human beings explain and understand their lives and universe.
