Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Surveys the psychology of human performance. Explores the psychological, emotional, and strategic dimensions of human performance. Emphasis will be to provide students with a comprehensive background that they can apply to their own performance areas.

II: Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to

  • develop the critical thinking about the mental principles and playing issues of human performance;
  • develop his or her own unique formula for performing;
  • balance the interplay between learning, retaining, and performing;
  • detail the stages of skill development;
  • develop a framework to confront performance fears, stresses, pressures, stage fright, and choking;
  • learn how to create, implement, and modify game plans;
  • know the most common myths about human performance (such as muscle memory, all are visual learners, and trying harder);
  • explore performance dynamics in teams, groups, and ensembles;
  • understand how to improve communication between performers, coaches, teachers, directors, parents, and family members; and
  • develop specific strategies and tactics which can be effectively applied during the actual performance.

Educational Program Mission Linkage The Psychology of Human Performance course is a general elective course for all degrees and certificates at WNC. It addresses the student learning outcomes of: 1. Improve oral and written communication skills. 2. Develop critical thinking skills. 3. Have a comprehensive background in understanding the principles of human performance and how to apply these principles.
