2008-2009 | I : Catalog Course Description |
| Introduces the student to historical development of surgery, the current role of the level I Surgical Technologist, and the roles of all members of the surgical health care team, including the associated ethical, moral, legal and communication responsibilities associated with the roles. Provides information regarding how safety is maintained in the OR environment through processes, procedures, and structural components of the OR suite and hospital. Included in the discussion of safety are the methodologies followed to administer medications and anesthesia and maintain a sterile environment. |
| II : Course Objectives |
At the conclusion of SRGT 100B, the student will be able to:
- Identify the members of the surgical team and their roles, with particular emphasis on the fundamental roles of the surgical technologist throughout the perioperative period;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of surgical terminology;
- list the physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of the surgical patient across the lifespan;
- discuss how laws, morals and ethics impact the practice of the surgical technologist;
- describe the physical components of the surgical suite and interventions utilized to safeguard patients and staff who occupy the space;
- discuss, at a beginning level, the administration of medications and anesthesia.
