| Introduces the student to the concepts of microbiology, the body's defenses, the inflammatory and infectious processes, and prevention and control of infection. Familiarizes the student with basic instruments used in the surgical environment and provides knowledge and experiences regarding the processes of sterilization and disinfection. Two credits lecture; 0.5 credits laboratory/clinical. |
| II : Course Objectives |
Upon completion of SRGT 102B, the student will be able to:
- Describe, in depth, the duties of the surgical technologist and other health care providers related to the processes of disinfection and sterilization.
- Define terminology related to infection control in the surgical setting, sterilization and disinfection processes;
- Compare and contrast the structure and characteristics of common microorganisms;
- Discuss the body's defenses against infection;
- Relate the infectious and inflammatory processes to surgical practice;
- Identify the purpose of common instruments used in the operating room environment;
- Explain the process of decontamination of instruments to the processing of instruments for sterilization;
- Compare and contrast all methods of sterilization used in the operating room suite.
- Discuss all types of sterilization methods, including their risks and hazards;
- Apply standard precautions to activities performed in the pre, intra, and post-operative phases of surgery;
- Apply the concepts of microbiology to the care of the patient
- Apply knowledge of instrument assembly for procedures while in a Central Processing Department.
