2007-2008 | I : Catalog Course Description |
| Introduces the student to entry-level skills performed by the Level I Surgical Technologist in the operating room. Skills include the surgical hand scrub, gown and glove procedures; common draping techniques; care of sutures and needles; the setting up of and maintenance of a sterile field, and the responsibilities associate with care of sponges, dressings, drains, specimens; instruments and special equipment. The duties of the circulating nurse and the Level I Surgical Technologist are further delineated, including their roles associated with common diagnostic procedures and laboratory tests utilized in the surgical setting. Three credits lecture; one credit lab. |
| II : Course Objectives |
Upon completion of SRGT 104B, the student will be able to:
- Describe in depth the duties of the scrub technologist and the circulating nurse.
- Recognize safety hazards in the surgical setting related to patient and personnel safety.
- Explain precautions taken to avoid injury to patients and personnel.
- Utilize the principles of sterile technique when scrubbing, gowning, gloving and when assisting other team members to gown and glove.
- Apply knowledge regarding the use of drapes in the operating room.
- Apply knowledge regarding counting procedures carried out in the intraoperative phase of surgery.
- Apply knowledge related to the processes of wound healing and wound care and dressings.
- Apply knowledge related to the processes of suturing and stapling.
- Utilize knowledge related to instrumentation.
- Apply knowledge related to the use of drains.
- Discuss how to properly handle tissue specimens.
- Discuss diagnostic procedure and laboratory tests utilized in the surgical setting for various disease process.

Achieve the Level 1 competences identified by the Association of
Surgical Technologies by demonstrating:
1) Knowledge and practice of basic patient-care concepts
2) Basic surgical case preparation skills. |
