| Discusses principles and procedures followed to maintain general patient safety and dignity in the OR suite, including pre-operative care, transportation, positioning, preparation of the operative, application of thermoregulatory devices, taking and recording vital signs, insertion of a urinary catheter, and maintenance of homeostasis through fluid and blood replacement. Provides information regarding the role of the Level I Surgical Technologist in developing emergency situations such as hemorrhage, cardiac arrest, malignant hyperthermia, and other medical/surgical emergencies. Two credits lecture, 0.5 credits laboratory/clinical. |
| II : Course Objectives |
Upon completion of SRGT 110B, the student will be able to:
- Discuss desired patient outcomes for the surgical patient in terms of safety, physiological and behavioral responses;
- Articulate the roles of the registered nurse and the surgical technologist in preparing the patient for surgery
- Describe AORN Standards to ensure quality patient care during the pre-operative phase;
- Explain the care that a surgical patient receives preoperatively that seeks to address physical, psychological and spiritual needs;
- Discuss the special needs of pediatric, geriatric and the immunosuppressed patient are met;
- Evaluate the items on the pre-operative patient checklist;
- State the purposes of the identification process for patients admitted to the operating room area;
- Demonstrate proper transportation, transfer, and positioning techniques for the surgical patient.
- Discuss common monitoring devices and interventions utilized to maintain homeostasis during surgery;
- Discuss perioperative documentation for the surgical technologist;
- Understand the methods of preparation of the operative site for surgery;
- Demonstrate how to perform a surgical prep;
- Develop an understanding of the process of anesthesia; including the processes followed for anesthesia preparation of the patient;
- Discuss components of anesthesia preparation;
- Discuss the types, stages and phases of anesthesia;
- Describe the goal of general anesthesia and the types of airway management;
- Describe types of regional anesthesia and the medications used for this procedure;
- Discuss complications of anesthesia;
- Discuss homeostatic parameters monitored during the perioperative period;
- Discuss immediate postoperative care of the surgical patients while they remain under the effects of anesthesia;
- List necessary equipment in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU)
- Analyze immediate postoperative care needs of the patient
- Discuss potential complications that may arise in the immediate postanesthesia period.
- Discuss the role of the surgical technologist during emergencies encountered during surgical procedures.
