I : Catalog Course Description
Introduces the student to the roles and responsibilities of the Level I Surgical Technologist that are associated with general and specific surgical procedures including abdominal, orthopedic, obstetric and gynecologic, genitourinary, transplant, plastic, opthalmic, ear, nose, throat and oral, neurological, microsurgery, cardiovascular and thoracic, and pediatric and geriatric surgery. Discussion of each surgical specialty includes a brief history of the type of surgery, common procedures utilized, special considerations based on growth and development and co-existing medical conditions, and medications associated with the procedure. Five credits lecture; .5 credit laboratory.
II : Course Objectives

At the conclusion of SRGT 111B course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge learned in anatomy and physiology, English, math, human relations and the first four Surgical Technologist courses to the care of patients undergoing specific surgical procedures;
  2. Discuss pathophysiology of body systems and organs that necessitate surgical procedures;
  3. Explain the roles and responsibilities of the surgical technologist throughout the perioperative phases of surgery when providing care to patients who are experiencing surgical interventions that encompass a variety of surgical specialties;
  4. Utilize selected specialized instruments and equipment for various operative procedures;
  5. Identify the names and use of special equipment related to various surgical specialties;
  6. Explain tests and procedures utilized to diagnose pathophysiological conditions;
  7. Discuss critical communication that must occur between and among members of the surgical team for safety, legal, ethical and moral reasons in order to accurately document events that occur throughout the perioperative phase of surgery.
  8. Discuss various surgical implants and Medical Device Tracking requirements.
  9. Differentiate between open and endoscopic procedures.
III : Course Linkage
Linkage of course to educational program mission and at least one educational program outcome.

The purpose of the Certificate of Achievement is to provide employment-related knowledge and skills.

The graduate will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Integrate and value knowledge derived from the bio/psycho/social sciences, humanities, and surgical technology, while providing surgical care to patients in a variety of health care settings under the direction of a registered nurse.

2. Achieve the Level I competencies identified by the Association of Surgical Technologists by demonstrating:

a. basic surgical case preparation skills
b. the ability to perform the role of first scrub on all basic surgical cases.
