Course Outline

I: Catalog Course Description

Introduces major figures, events and ideas in theatre and dramatic literature from its origins to the present. Read, analyze and discuss representative plays.

II: Course Objectives

By the completion of the class, students should, with 75% accuracy:

  • Recognize types of drama and their conventions, as well as the styles of the most influential dramatists.
  • Discuss basic elements of theater: audience, performers and performances.
  • Use the language of drama: setting, costume, gestures, sound effects, dialogue, plot and structure, character and theme.

Students should:
1. Know the subject matter appropriate to the musical theater degree.
2. Write papers which demonstrate research, reading, and critical thinking skills.
3. Succeed at transfer institutions.
