Law Enforcement Training

WNC offers a 30-week, 30.5-credit program to prepare students for careers in law enforcement. The academy begins each January and meets all Nevada and POST certification requirements. Anyone interested in this program should apply early to be considered for the following January academy. For more information call 775-445-4408.

Applications are being continually accepted.

Please note that as of June 2009, CRJ 103 is now a prerequisite. All prospective recruits must pass this class with a grade of "B" or better to be accepted into the police academy. This class will be offered each fall semester.

All applicants must pass a pre-physical fitness qualification prior to the start of classes. The first week will be orientation. The qualifying physical fitness testing will be during orientation. The following are the minimum standards for entry into the academy.

  • Height by vertical jump: 11 inches
  • Sit-ups in one minute: 22
  • Push-ups in one minute: 21
  • 300 meter run: 85 seconds
  • 1.5 mile run/walk: 20:00 m/s
  • Illinois Agility Run: 22.3 seconds

The program is a combination Category I and III academy.

Seating is limited. Qualifying students will be accepted on a first come-first served basis. A qualifying student is defined as one who has submitted all the required documentation with the completed application, has passed a background check, passed CRJ 103 with a B or better, and passed the pre-physical fitness testing.

Convenient Scheduling

The academy schedule is designed for those individuals who need to work and/or tend to their family's needs, while pursuing their interest in law enforcement.

Cadets will attend training on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6-10 pm and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 am-5 pm. There will be the occasional exceptions for Officer Survival, Firearms and Emergency Vehicle Operations training. Students will have at least two months notification when these sessions will occur.

Physical Fitness Testing

To continue in the program, the following standards must be met before the 16th week of the academy. In addition, each cadet must pass these standards again at the end of the academy, in order to graduate.

  • Sit-ups in one minute: 32
  • Push-ups in one minute: 30
  • 300 meter run: 65 seconds
  • 1.5 mile run/walk: 15:30 m/s
