Art Exhibits: Carson
How To Apply for an Exhibition in the WNC Carson City Galleries
Thank you for your interest in the WNC Carson City campus galleries.
We have three exhibition spaces - the Main Gallery which opened in January 2006; the College Gallery, the original WNC Carson gallery; and the Atrium Gallery, an area near the Main Gallery, not originally designed as an exhibition space, but with beautiful natural light from skylights overhead. Our galleries are open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. All three are located in the Bristlecone Building, our main administrative and student services building.
We host six exhibitions every year in each of these spaces, plus one summer exhibition. The Art Faculty Exhibition, the first show of the fall, and the Student Art Exhibition, the last show of the spring, generally utilize all three spaces. The summer exhibition is usually in the Main Gallery, and, depending on the show, may expand to make use of one or both of the others as well.
Other exhibitions vary. In the Main Gallery we generally feature the work of mature artists working in the main art mediums in which we offer classes--ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, photography and sculptural installations. We are particularly interested in showing the work of one or two artists or artist/educators from other schools that visit during their exhibitions and interact with our students either in the classroom or in workshops, enriching our art program with new ideas and techniques.
The Main Gallery is approximately 1,000 square feet of contemporary exhibition space. It is an elegant, formal gallery with nine-foot high walls, a hardwood floor and an open black ceiling.
The College Gallery is located in the main hallway of the Bristlecone Building near the Main Gallery and has two large eight-foot high exhibition walls approximately 50 feet long. It has new modern lighting that matches the lighting in our Main Gallery. It is our most public exhibition space, with people traversing it all day long.
The Atrium Gallery, also located near the Main Gallery, was not originally designed as an exhibition space, but with its inviting walls bathed in natural light from the skylights overhead, it has become a favorite show space for some of our artists.
Our gallery schedule is generally set one to two years in advance and final planning takes place in each spring -- generally during March and April. To apply for an exhibition in the Main Gallery, artists should send a packet in the spring with a cover letter, vitae, 10-20 slides or a CD with digital images representative of what the proposed show, a typed list of titles for the images including approximate sizes, medium used, dates of completion; and a statement about the work. The packet must include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so that images may be returned. Artists may include a web site address, but it will be viewed as supplemental information, and is not acceptable as a substitution.
To apply for an exhibition in the WNC College Gallery or the Atrium Gallery, submissions should include a proposal, examples of the work (slides or digital images), and a brief statement about the proposed work. A web site address may be included, but it will be viewed as supplemental information, and is not acceptable as a substitution.
