7 pm: Rick Gunn's Words and Images From a Bike Journey Around the World: WNC Presents Rick Gunn's Words and Images
From a Bike Journey Around the World
CARSON CITY--Photographer Rick Gunn has done something many people have thought about, but almost no one has the courage to do: he left his job to take a bicycle journey around the world. Gunn brings his 90-minute presentation "Soulcycler, Words and Images From a 25,811-Mile Bicycle Journey Around-The-World," to Western Nevada College. The multimedia show will be Wednesday, March 11, 7 p.m. at Marlette Hall, Cedar Building at Western's Carson City campus. The suggested donation is $10.
His presentation combines 350 breath-taking photos from 33 countries, set to music, accompanied by a selection of uniquely emotional stories from around the globe. Inspired by a series of formative experiences during his childhood, Gunn delivers a front-row seat for the pursuit of his lifelong dream of cycling the planet.
"I'm looking forward to this show," Gunn said. "The Brewery Arts Center show in November was sold out, and a lot of people have asked when I'm going to have another presentation in Carson City."
The former news photographer is working on a book about his two-year, 10-month solo bicycle journey. In his typical globe-trotting style, Gunn will leave in March to write for two months in Scotland. He plans to take side trips to cycle in the Pyrenees and Italian Alps during breaks in compiling his book.
Gunn was much more than an observer on his journey around the world. He was transformed by the war, poverty, and disease he found along the way. He volunteered at an AIDS hospice in Thailand, and covered bomb extraction and mine victim rehabilitation in Laos and Vietnam. He was moved when visiting an orphanage in Nepal.
Gunn said the audiences at his presentation mirror his activism. "The question and answer sessions after the shows are great. The audiences just don't sit back - they get involved and ask what they can do to help. One of the things I've learned is that everybody can do something."
By viewing the world from the seat of a bicycle, Gunn is able to deliver a
first-hand account of the realization of a dream, the current state of the planet, and what it means to care.
10 am – 4 pm: Blood Donors Earn a Chance at a Free Laptop: Blood Donors Earn a Chance at a Free Laptop
CARSON CITY--Regular blood donors know the great all-over feeling they get from helping out a vital cause, but at the end of the month, there will be an extra incentive. Second year nursing students at Western Nevada College are hosting a blood drive on Saturday, March 28, in Carson City, Gardnerville and Dayton, and each donor gets a raffle ticket for a laptop computer donated by Harley Davidson Financial Services.
There will be prizes donated by other local merchants as well, including one by Michael's Cycle Works in Carson City.
Nursing student Ciera Staggs said the drives will be held simultaneously, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Carson City Wal-Mart near College Parkway, the Gardnerville East Fork Fire Station #7, and Smith's Grocery in Dayton.
Staggs said she hoped the drive would result in 120 or more blood donations for northern Nevada. Those with questions or who would like to set an appointment to donate should call Katie at United Blood Services at 775-315-7287, or register on line at bloodhero.com, sponsor code WNC. Staggs may be reached at 722-8410.
