WNC Faculty and Staff Directory Aaron Demosthenes |
Aaron Demosthenes is the Western Nevada Wildcats hitting coach. He also serves as the team's assistant infield coach. Coach Demosthenes brings a wealth of coaching experience to the Wildcats staff. Coach "Demo," as he is known on the field, has a simple goal of making each hitter the best he can be. He does not believe in cloning hitters, but rather improving the swing the players bring into the program.
The 2008 campaign was a banner year for Wildcat hitters. The team led the Scenic West Conference in nearly every offensive category, including batting average, hits, extra base hits, doubles, home-runs, and slugging percentage, and struck out the fewest number of times. This marked the second consecutive year the Wildcats led the conference in doubles and extra base-hits. Hitting for power has become a trademark of Coach Demosthenes' teams over the last three years. Coach Demo also helped eight hitters earn selection to the Region XVIII First or Second teams, and coached the Region XVIII Co-Player of the Year - Brian Barnett.
Coach Demosthenes' hard work with hitters paid big dividends for the WNC team and its individual players. The Wildcats placed five hitters on the Scenic West All-Conference first team (Tyson Jaquez-2006, Andrew Reid-2007, Chuck Howard-2008, Jerome Pena-2008, Brian Barnett-2008) and five others on the second team (Thomas Miller-2006, Kyle Bondurant-2006 & 2007, Brad Carlsen-2007, Lance Ray-2008, Travis Feiner-2008).
Perhaps most impressive regarding Coach Demosthenes' hitters is that every member of the 2006 & 2007 Wildcats starting lineup has earned and signed a scholarship to a four-year college or university. The 2006 Wildcats: 1B - Thomas Miller, 2B - Kyle Bondurant, SS -Jerahmie Libke, 3B - Tyson Jaquez, LF - Pat Grennan, CF - Aaron Henry, RF- Brad Carlsen, and C - Taylor Mieras. The 2007 starters: C- Chuck Howard, DH - Andrew Ferguson, SS - Kevin Schlange, 2B - Logan Parsley, 1B - Andrew Reid, RF - Cliff Shepard.
In 2007, Coach Demosthenes' hitters led the Scenic West Conference in extra base hits (76), doubles (62), and walks (147). In addition, Western's Andrew Reid led the conference at bat by hitting .400. These statistics are testimony to Demo's philosophy: "Get a good pitch to hit and take a big rip."
Coach Demosthenes was born and raised in Reno and has deep ties to Northern Nevada. He attended Wooster High School and graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a bachelor's degree in speech communication. While at Wooster, Aaron started in football and baseball and had the opportunity to play for two of the finest coaches in Nevada. While playing football for Joe Sellers, Aaron attracted the attention of the University of Nevada and accepted a full-ride scholarship. While playing baseball for Ron Malcolm at Wooster High School, Coach Demosthenes helped the Colts win the Northern AAA regional championship in 1990.
Demo's coaching career began in 1992. In 2001, Coach Demosthenes helped Galena High School capture the Northern Nevada AAAA regional championship, and finish second in the state. Coach Demosthenes also boasts six seasons coaching the Sierra Sun Devils, Northern Nevada's premier age 18 and under team. The Sun Devils routinely churn out the best pro and college prospects the area has to offer. Twice coach Demo helped the Sun Devils to National Joe DiMaggio Championships (2002 and 2003). In addition, Demo has worked for the Colorado Rockies as an associate scout for eight seasons.
Besides his passion for coaching, Coach Demo has a passion for teaching the game to players of all ages. Since the inception of WB Baseball School in 1999, Coach Demo has worked as an instructor. In 2002, he purchased 50 percent of the business and acts as the managing partner. WB Baseball has had an impressive list of clientele over the past six years and has helped further the career of many college and professional players.
Aaron and his wife, Gaelen, have three young children, sons Cole and Ty, and a daughter, Ali.
