Baseball Legend Steve Garvey Stars at WNCC Athletics Dinner

Former National League Most Valuable Player and 10-time All-Star Steve Garvey will be the keynote speaker at Western Nevada Community College's first major athletics fundraising event. The dinner and auction will be at the Carson City Community Center on Wednesday, March 31, 6 to 9 p.m. Proceeds will benefit all WNCC athletic programs, including the rodeo team, which is beginning its second year of competition, and planned baseball and women's soccer teams. Join WNCC Wildcats supporters in a fun and casual evening of beef tri tip, hot dogs, Cracker Jack and other ball park fare, along with sports games such as a pitching speed gun, agility ladder and more.

Tickets are $75 or $50 for children age 16 and under and includes hosted drinks. A limited number of autographed baseballs can be purchased by ticket holders for $30. Reserved tables for 10 can be purchased for $1000, which includes 10 autographed baseballs. There will be both a silent and a live auction.

Garvey, who played first base for the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres, was a hitting machine with a propensity for the limelight. He was the All-Star MVP twice and holds the All-Star game record for most appearances at first base with 10. He hit .356 in 22 National League Championship games, .319 in 28 World Series games and .393 in his 10 All-Star appearances. He is probably best known for his National League record of playing in 1,207 consecutive games. Garvey was part of the longest-running infield in baseball history--8 1/2 years with Dodger teammates Davey Lopes, Bill Russell and Ron Cey. In 1977, Garvey hit 33 homers, becoming part of the only Dodger team with four players who hit 30 or more homers, with Cey, Dusty Baker and Reggie Smith.

Tickets can be purchased at Bully's Sports Bar & Grill, 3530 N. Carson St., the WNCC Foundation office at 2201 West College Parkway, Bristlecone Building Room 123, or by calling the Foundation office at 775-445-3240.
