J.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" novels meet the works of Plato and Aristotle in a fall semester philosophy class at Western Nevada Community College. The three-credit class, Introduction to Philosophy, meets Tuesdays, 7-9:45 p.m. at the Carson City campus. WNCC fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 30.
Register for the class (PHIL 101, Sec. C01, call #35535) on the college web site at www.wnc.edu. The fee is $159.
Instructor Blakely Hume describes the class as, "An introduction to philosophy set against the background of 'The Lord of the Rings' and using examples from the trilogy. We will try to find answers to eternal questions like 'Will nature rise in revolt against technology and would we find everlasting life a bore and a burden?'"
Students will explore issues in areas of philosophy such as ethics, political theory, metaphysics and epistemology.
