D.J. Whittemore has been selected as Western Nevada Community College's first baseball coach. Whittemore was the head assistant baseball coach and pitching coach at Feather River College in Quincy, Calif. He also served as the college's recruiting and fund-raising coordinator.
WNCC Dean of Student Services Dan Neverett said, " We are extremely pleased to welcome D.J. to the WNCC community as the college's new head baseball coach. His experience and enthusiasm are a great fit for our students as we begin to build our athletics program."
A graduate of Wooster High School in Reno, Whittemore returned as a teacher and the outfield/pitching and conditioning coach from 2000-2003, when the Colts were 2001 state tournament qualifiers and 2002 Nevada AAAA state baseball champions.
A community college graduate, he earned an associate degree from Santa Barbara City College, and a bachelor's degree from Oregon State University. He is currently an area scout for the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team.
As WNCC's head baseball coach, Whittemore's responsibilities also include recruiting and fund raising for the Western Wildcats.
"There are plenty of talented, eager players in the state to fill all four college baseball programs," said Whittemore. "I plan to recruit the schools closest to WNCC first and gradually expand from there. We will only recruit exceptional athletes who are good people and excellent students, and we'll be specifically seeking athletes who qualify for the Millennium Scholarship."
College President Carol Lucey said, "The addition of intercollegiate athletics at Western Nevada Community College will enhance the college environment and allow us to better serve the needs of traditional age college students."
According to Neverett, "This marks an important milestone for WNCC and western Nevada. High school baseball players will now have a greater opportunity to continue their athletics as they head to college without leaving the area. Baseball is very popular here, and our area has produced many outstanding players at the high school, college and major league levels. The Wildcats are proud to become a part of western Nevada's proud baseball tradition."
WNCC is considering membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association. Students would compete at the Division III level, which does not allow for athletic scholarships. Those who have earned the Millennium Scholarship or receive other financial assistance will be able to utilize their awards at WNCC.
The inaugural season for the baseball team is set for the 2005-2006 academic year.
