New Art Instructor Joins WNCC Fallon

New Western Nevada Community College Fallon art instructor Gil Martin earned his first university degrees in art history and English literature, but it wasn't until he entered a community college that he became inspired to be a studio artist.

Martin says that during his graduate and undergraduate studies he did no studio work. "But then I attended Highline Community College in Washington," says Martin, "and I had an instructor who sent me on the path I'm on now. That's one of the reasons I took this position: I hope to do the same for students at WNCC."

The Seattle native was an assistant art professor at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. for the last three years. He earned bachelor's degrees in English literature and art history from the University of Washington and a Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon.

Martin's works are unusual in that he makes his own pigments from earth he finds alongside roads and at construction sites.

"I have green from Oregon, black from Illinois, blue-gray from the Ocoee River in Tennessee, red and yellow from northeast Georgia," says Martin. "I'm looking forward to finding some new colors in western Nevada."

Martin is teaching drawing, art appreciation and painting classes. To register for fall semester classes, visit the college web site at www.wnc.edu. Classes begin Monday, Aug. 30. Late registration begins Saturday, Aug. 28, and continues through Friday, Sept. 10.
