Western Nevada Community College is moving closer to expansion of the Fallon campus with a major donation by two noted Fallon residents. A $200,000 gift has been made to the WNCC Foundation by former state Sen. Virgil Getto of Fallon and local businessman Pat Fisler, to help purchase additional acreage for the landlocked WNCC Fallon campus.
The move came after Getto deeded 40 acres of property to the college last spring, and Fisler has now purchased that property to complete the donation. A Fallon campus land acquisition fund was begun six years ago with another major gift by former state Sen. Carl Dodge and his wife, Bette.
WNCC's Fallon campus sits on ten acres adjacent to the Fallon Convention Center. The campus includes three buildings that house classrooms, laboratories, library and student services. More than 1,000 students attend each semester.
"Senators Getto and Dodge, and Mr. Fisler have been very generous in assisting our college as we develop a land acquisition fund to meet our future campus needs," said WNCC President Carol Lucey. "The Fallon campus is currently landlocked and we've done as much construction as we can reasonably accomplish on the site, while still allowing for adequate parking. We're looking in all directions for possible expansion, to accommodate future student and academic program growth."
According to Fallon campus Dean Bus Scharmann, "This important fund continues to grow thanks to the continuing, active support by community leaders and businesses. We sincerely thank all those who have been a part of this contribution and look forward to utilizing the funds to benefit rural students."
