Western Nevada Community College hosted its first athletic signing ceremonies this past weekend for recruits to its new Wildcat baseball team. In all, 18 players have made commitments to play at the college in its inaugural 2005-2006 season.
Head baseball coach DJ Whittemore said, "What excites me most about these players is the quality of character that each individual possesses. Out of the 13 students from Nevada, 11 are Millennium Scholarship eligible. I also feel they're an outstanding group of athletes who have received numerous individual awards and recognition in other sports, in addition to baseball."
WNCC has been accepted as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, and has applied to play baseball and women's soccer in the Scenic West conference in the 2005-2006 school year.
According to Whittemore, the Scenic West is one of the premier baseball conferences in the country, with teams that have captured the national junior college baseball title several times in recent years. It includes Nevada's largest college, Community College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, which won the national championship two years ago.
The Scenic West is a Division I conference that will allow WNCC to offer athletic scholarships as well as afford students the opportunity to utilize the Millennium Scholarship and other types of financial assistance.
The college is embarking on a fund-raising effort to construct a baseball facility at its Carson City campus in Nevada's capital.
WNCC also has an intercollegiate rodeo team that competes in the West Coast Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association.
