Western Nevada Community College head coach D.J. Whittemore announced the members of the school's first ever recruiting class. Eighteen players from all-over the west coast signed during the first three days of the National Letter of Intent NJCAA signing period. "I am extremely pleased with the way our program has been received by the players we recruited," said an elated Whittemore. "The players realized that being a part of a new program represented a great opportunity. The fact that we will play some of the best teams in country every year as part of our conference schedule also had a lot to do with the success of the recruiting efforts." The class represents an excellent all-around group of student athletes many of whom are multiple sport standouts. Included were seven pitchers, two catchers, three outfielders, and six infielders. Thirteen of the eighteen hail from the state of Nevada, eleven of which are eligible for the Millennium Scholarship. "Recruiting intelligent, talented, outstanding citizens has been our goal since day one and I think this class represents those goals," said Whittemore. Among the players signed three graduated in 2004 while the other fifteen will graduate spring of 2005.
Western Nevada Community College held two separate signing ceremonies this past weekend in an effort to accommodate players from different parts of the state. The first was held on the college's Carson City campus on Saturday morning. More than forty parents, siblings, grandparents, high school coaches, school administrators, and members of local media outlets were on hand to witness the first eight signers ink there letter's of intent.
On Monday four of the schools officials including the Dean of Students, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and the Director of Marketing, traveled to Las Vegas and hosted a similar signing ceremony at the Hard Rock Hotel. On hand in Las Vegas were thirty witnesses to the first southern Nevada players signing with the school.
In addition to the players who attended one of the ceremonies five other players were unable to attend and signed in their home towns.
