Teamwork, fitness and fun are the goals of a two-month "journey" beginning at Western Nevada Community College today. One hundred ten college faculty, staff, students and other community partners have signed up for the "Walk to Vegas," a hypothetical 433-mile journey to Las Vegas, using pedometers as they go about their daily routines.
Participants are on five-member teams, and each person will track how many miles they walk from Tuesday, Feb. 1 until Friday, April 29. The person with the most miles wins a round trip to Las Vegas for two, including a room and dinner show. Team winners get free lunches at Bully's and $25 gift certificates at Big 5 Sporting Goods.
The event is sponsored by the WNCC Foundation and includes both Foundation board and advisory board members from the college's seven-county service area.
Helaine Jesse, WNCC vice president of Institutional Advancement, said, "We thought it would be a fun way for people to get in shape and to 'compete' in a friendly manner with colleagues. We assigned participants to the teams, so members will interact with people they don't necessarily work with on a day-to-day basis. It will be fun."
