"Legends and Tales in Nevada Sports, An Evening with Coach Sellers" is scheduled for Wednesday April 27th, at the Peppermill Hotel and Casino in Reno. The owners of the Peppermill have agreed to provide the Tahoe Ballroom and the approximately 200 meals at a greatly reduced price. National High School Hall of Fame Coach Joe Sellers will be the featured speaker. Hosted beer and wine will start at 6:00 PM with dinner set to begin at 7:00 PM and the program to follow.
Proceeds from ticket sales along with the silent auction and live auction will benefit the Western Nevada athletic program. The athletic program consists of three intercollegiate teams; the Co-Ed Rodeo team based in Fallon and the two new sports, Baseball and Women's Soccer which are based in Carson City. The college foundation has set an ambitious goal of raising $100,000 during the evening. Organizers are hoping to sell 200+ tickets and are hoping that Coach Sellers name recognition in the Northern Nevada athletic community will provide the draw.
Joe Sellers is has a long and storied tradition in Northern Nevada Athletics. Sellers history in Northern Nevada began after serving in the military at which time he moved to Reno to play football for the University of Nevada. Sellers started two seasons for the Wolfpack before earning his Bachelors. Since graduating from Nevada Sellers has been a teacher, administrator, coach, and athletic director for over thirty years. Sellers has coached four different sports at the Varsity level at three different area high schools. He coached first at Hug High School, then Wooster High School for over 25 years, and is currently coaching at Bishop Manogue. He has spent time coaching Wrestling, Baseball, Softball, and of course Football. In addition to his duties as the Miners Head Football Coach Sellers also serves as the Athletic Director. Joe Sellers has spent his entire adult life sharing his talents with young adults as a coach, teacher, and administrator.
Coach Sellers induction into the National Hall of Fame in 2003 was based on his outstanding career at Wooster High School. He led the Wooster Colts to seven large school state football championships and complied the winingest record in Nevada football history. Sellers has won over 83% of his games over his career and has an overall record of 250 wins against just 45 loses.
