Western Nevada Community College's new baseball facility has been named John L. Harvey Field. The Board of Regents of the University and Community College System of Nevada today approved WNCC President Carol L. Lucey's request to name the field after the late Carson City resident, a Presbyterian pastor and long-time supporter of youth sports in the community.
Members of Reverend Harvey's family attended the Regents' meeting, including son Fred Harvey, son-in-law Dr. Robert Whittemore, grandson Harvey Whittemore and great-grandson D.J. Whittemore. The Whittemore Family Foundation has donated more than $400,000 toward the construction of the field, and D.J. Whittemore is the college's first head baseball coach.
Helaine Jesse, WNCC's vice-president of Institutional Advancement, said, "Being pretty much a Carson City native, this is a profound moment for me, having three generations of Carsonites and northern Nevadans honoring a fourth generation. And, we wouldn't even be close to having this field if it weren't for the generosity of the Whittemore family."
In a related matter, the Board of Regents approved Phase 2 of the construction of the WNCC baseball stadium, which will include design and construction for a hitting facility, concession stands, stadium seating, a press box and plaza.
The Western Wildcats are Division I members of the National Junior College Athletic Association and have applied for admission to the Scenic West Athletic Conference. The team has more than twenty players signed and will begin competing this fall.
