Western Nevada Community College is partnering with the Carson City School District to provide science education training for 60 Nevada middle school and elementary school teachers. WNCC received an award from the Nevada Department of Education's Great Explorations in Math and Science Associate training program, which is designed to help teachers provide their students with innovative math and science courses.
GEMS was developed at the Lawrence Hall of Science, the public science education center at the University of California at Berkeley. Participants will be trained as Teacher Leaders at Carson Middle School June 21-22 and return to their school districts to train other teachers to use the GEMS methods and materials.
Local coordinators for the program are WNCC Professor Robert Collier and Gail Bushey, a seventh grade science teacher at Carson Middle School. Bushey is the Nevada GEMS Site Director and has been providing professional development with the GEMS curriculum in northern Nevada for ten years.
